Environmental Initiatives of Khorgos Gateway for the Conservation of Water Resources

Khorgos Gateway, the largest dry port in Central Asia, is located in the basin of the Khorgos River, a tributary of the Ili River, one of the key sources of water supply in the region. The company is implementing a comprehensive set of environmental measures in full compliance with the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the regulations of the Khorgos - Eastern Gate SEZ.
One of the company’s key priorities is the rational use of water and the reduction of pressure on local water sources. To achieve this, modern water metering systems and regular consumption monitoring have been introduced, while water use in technological processes, including equipment washing and maintenance of service areas, has been optimized. These measures help maintain the water balance of the area and prevent excessive consumption.
Special attention is given to stormwater management. The complex operates a modern stormwater drainage system that prevents pollutants from entering the soil and hydrological bodies, including the Khorgos River channel. The system includes stormwater drains equipped with oil separators, sand traps, and regular monitoring of wastewater quality. This approach ensures reliable protection of the environment from industrial pollution.
Khorgos Gateway also strictly controls the handling of hazardous waste. To minimize the risk of chemical contamination of water and soil, dedicated storage areas for hazardous materials have been established, technical fluids are stored in sealed containers, and cooperation is maintained with licensed companies for their safe disposal. These measures ensure a high level of industrial safety and prevent negative environmental impacts.
The conservation of water resources is closely linked to landscaping and dust reduction measures. As part of the annual national environmental campaign “Taza Qazaqstan,” the complex’s territory is landscaped, soil is stabilized, and dust emissions are reduced. In 2025, 500 trees were planted in adjacent areas as part of the campaign. Additional internal initiatives are also implemented, such as the “Recycle a Battery – Save a Hedgehog” campaign, through which more than 12 kg of alkaline batteries were collected and sent for recycling. Employees regularly receive training on separate waste collection, including paper, plastic, and glass, contributing to the development of an environmentally responsible corporate culture.
Khorgos Gateway holds a full set of environmental documentation, including an environmental permit, a waste management plan, and industrial environmental control reports. This ensures not only compliance with regulatory requirements but also a systematic approach to the protection of water resources and the environment.
By consistently implementing comprehensive environmental measures, KTZE–Khorgos Gateway makes a significant contribution to the conservation of the Khorgos and Ili river basins, supports strategically important regional ecosystems, and demonstrates its commitment to ESG principles and sustainable development.
